The perch

I love the life lessons present in nature. I like to watch the mockingbirds perch on the corner of my house and sing. They sing all the time, especially in the spring. I hear them everywhere, actually. I always wondered what they were doing up there singing so incessantly, so one day I did a little reading. What I learned was that their songs have purpose. And they have so many songs! They learn sounds from other birds, frogs, even non-organic sounds like car horns.

Learning this, I thought…but why do they do this?! They do it for many reasons. Mating, territory protection during fledgling season in the spring, and just general communication. They can learn hundreds of songs in their lifetime! This is literally a way of life and I am sure it is an element of their survival.

What great creativity and adaptability these birds have. It makes me think that if they can thrive and survive with creativity and adaptability, then so can I.
